Bach Magnificat with chorus, orchestra and soloists, along with Christmas motets by Poulenc and Sweelinck sung by a chamber choir.
The Arts at Grace concert series will offer its fifth Christmas program on Sunday, December 7 at 3:00 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, 13 Court Street in Cortland. The Magnificat by Johann Sebastian Bach and Four Motets of the Christmas Season by Francis Poulenc will be the featured works. A community chorus, The Arts at Grace Chamber Chorus, a professional orchestra, and a stellar group of vocal soloists will perform. David Neal, will conduct the Magnificat. Marion Giambattista will conduct the Motets. Audience members are invited to join the artists at a post concert reception. There is no charge for the event.
J.S. Bach composed the Magnificat in Leipzig for the 1723 Christmas vespers. He conceived the work on a grand scale. It required five soloists and a five-part choir and a much larger orchestra than was typical of Bach's time. The splendor and jubilation of the piece makes it a pleasure to both perform and to hear. Soloists for the concert will be: Sopranos Loralyn Light and Marion Giambattista, mezzo-soprano Elizabeth Duhr, alto Gail Behrenfeld, lyric tenor Mark Lawrence, and lyric baritone Brad Hougham. Four Motets of the Christmas Season are deeply personal reflections on Christmas texts. Francis Poulenc was a twentieth century French composer influenced by a wide variety of musical genres. His works combine beautiful melodies and rich harmonies. They are among the greatest religious choral music of the last century.
The Arts at Grace is a community outreach effort of Grace Episcopal Church.
